Country Air Gardens is a wholesale/retail nursery, growing the largest range of perennials in Western Australia.
Our specialties are perennials, aquatic plants, Hemerocallis (Daylilies), Iris, Hosta's and other plants that are rare and/or unusual. Essentially we grow anything that takes our fancy, if we don't like it, we don't grow it.
The majority of our plants we propagate ourselves, from seeds and plants obtained from around the globe.
We do supplement our stock with tubestock brought in from interstate. We find that many plants when brought into Western Australia can take as long as several years to acclimatize to our conditions, some never make it. For this reason we bring in only those species which we cannot produce enough of ourselves.
All our plants are grown outside or under shadecloth or trees for shade loving species, some frost tender species are over-wintered in a poly tunnel. The conditions here range from -10C night temperatures in Winter, to 50C day temperatures in Summer.
The plants are fertilized once, when potted, with a slow release fertilizer, other than this they receive no extra feeding. This ensures that they do not suffer shock when planted in the garden.
We do not use fungicides and the only insecticide we use is a pyrethrum dip for the occasional case of root aphids, which unfortunately seem to have no predators.
During the early 80's we grew and sold Hemerocallis(Daylilies). Then in 1987 we started the nursery at our residence in Cardup, a small community South of Perth, Western Australia. In 1991 we sold our property and moved to a new property in Mooliabeenie, approximately 100km North of Perth. Over a period of 9 months or so we relocated our entire plant stock, which consisted of some 20,000 Hemerocallis as well as tens of thousands of other assorted plants in pots and in the ground, during this time we maintained both properties as well as ran the business. We have failed to slow down since, constantly trying new plants, what makes it to the catalogue is only the tip of the iceberg, and branching into new fields.
The aim of our website is to provide an integrated approach to gardening in W.A.
You can browse the site, choose which plants are suitable for your garden, order them from one of our stockist's and then when you get them home, you have access to all the information necessary for their care and maintenance in West Australian conditions, something that has been sorely lacking until now.
Every attempt has been made to make the pages in this website fast to load and browser friendly. However certain pages(The Stocklist & Master List) can only be viewed with Internet Explorer. This is due to our use of databinding, the only means by which we can update our lists frequently with ease. We are sorry if this causes any inconvenience.
